The Great Hunger:A Great Immigration

Objective: For the students to explain and analyze the pros and cons of Irish immigrants coming to America from the perspective of an Irish immigrant and from the perspective of an American.


Answer:
Perspecive of an Irish immigrant:
Pros- They could escape poverty
- They could begin a better life
- They no longer had to struggle for food
Cons- Conditions traveling to America by ship were very poor and many ended up dying on the journey
- They had to begin their lives over again in an unfamiliar world
- Some Irish were disliked by some Americans
- They left behind their heritage and family
Perspective of an American:
Pros- Company and business owners and regular people hired the Irish for very cheap
- They could take advantage of the new Irish immigrants and earn themselves a large profit
Cons- The cities became very crowded and overpopulated
- The Americans were often surrounded by Irish who were lost and confused
- The Irish began practicing their own customs and culture and changing the American culture
